Can you survive stage 4 breast cancer?

Can you survive stage 4 breast cancer?
I just found out that my aunt has progressed to stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to his liver, lymnode, leg, neck etc. I do not know much about cancer and all I really want know is what is the rate of survival When you reach step 4? The doctors plan chemotherapy.

answer:
Stage 4 breast cancer has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body.

In stage IV breast cancer, the cancer has spread elsewhere in the body. The affected areas May include bone, brain, lungs or liver. Because many areas may be involved, focused treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy alone are not sufficient. Until now, treatment of breast cancer with stage IV does not provide a cure for the disease. By reducing the cancer, treatment can slow the disease, you will feel better and allow you to live longer. Although patients with breast cancer stage IV may live for years, it is usually fatal at a given moment. Many factors influence this

* Chemotherapy, or treatment with drugs against cancer, is often the main treatment. It may slow cancer growth. Chemotherapy is often used in combination with hormone therapy or immunotherapy.

* Hormone therapy may be the key for women with cancer hormone receptor positive. These hormones are cancers that need to grow. Tamoxifen has been used to block the effects of estrogen for decades. But the new drugs such as aromatase inhibitors, Arimidex and Femara, and Aromasin aromatase inactivator, also show great promise. They reduce the amount of estrogen your body makes. By cutting the supply of estrogen, you can suppress the cancer and slow down. Women who have not reached menopause may consider having their ovaries removed to prevent them from making hormones that contribute to cancer growth.

* Biological therapy is a new approach. In about 25% of women with breast cancer, an excess of a protein called HER2 makes the cancer has spread quickly. Herceptin is a new drug that has been approved to treat women with breast cancer metastatic HER2-positive. It stops the protein to grow cancer cells. It may also strengthen your immune system, giving him the strength to fight the cancer itself. It is most often used in combination with chemotherapy.

* Clinical trials are open to many women with stage IV cancer. A clinical trial you may allow access to advanced treatments. Many new therapies – new drugs, new treatments and new combinations – are in clinical trials now. Keep in mind that any successful treatment, we have now started a clinical trial.

* Surgery and radiotherapy are used in some cases. These treatments are not used to cure cancer. But they may help treat pain and other symptoms in areas where the cancer has spread.

* Other medications may also help treat some side effects of treatment of breast cancer, such as nausea, fatigue and infections.
